27 & 28 March 2019 - St. James Settlement Career Live Simulation Game

Career guidance is an important topic for S5 students, as it is time for us to explore various possibilities for our future career, as well as a wide range of university subjects offered in JUPAS during our final months of S6, before we take our DSE exams. Thus, the school has arranged an activity run by the St. James Settlement, known as the Career Live Simulation Game, for S5 students to experience a simulated reality of careers across different industries or fields, including Science, Media Productions and the like. What we, as S5 students, expected was a low-quality rendition of different jobs. What we didn't expect though, is how effectively a simple activity gave us insights on choosing our future career.

In the activity, we were given three trials to participate in tasks or games related to three unique kinds of jobs, and we were allowed to choose our careers totally freely. However, the catch was that jobs were chosen on a first-come-first-serve basis, forcing us to rush to apply for jobs we wanted. In the activity, there were realistic job duties allocated to you and simulations, as well as career videos for students to understand the career pathway and workplace of their chosen jobs. At last, there was a sharing session between volunteers of organizers and students, in order to exchange ideas about the activity. This gave students a better idea of the benefits and drawbacks of different jobs thoroughly, so that they could better plan for their future, which is the aim of career guidance in its simplest form.

In a nutshell, all students left with much more information and in-depth understanding about career planning than they had before!
