The Sharing Session about the slope safety system in Hong Kong was held during the assembly on April 13, 2023 (Thur). The school has invited Mr WONG Kwan Lok, Eugene, a chartered civil and geotechnical engineer responsible for technical development work in natural terrain hazard mitigation, in the Geotechnical Engineering Office. We understood the causes of the fatal landslides in Hong Kong, including the Po Shan Road Landslide in 1972. Therefore, we are better equipped to understand our roles as citizens during disasters.

Besides the Sharing Session, CEDD has lent some exhibition boards about slope safety outside the Activity Centre Extension. These boards present information about how STEM applications are crucial to Hong Kong's sustainable growth to lower the risk of landslides.

From the display boards and the talk about slope safety and landslides, I learned that Hong Kong is very prone to landslides because Hong Kong has a vast population that lacks flatland to develop. With many natural and artificial slopes, a hot and humid climate, especially in summer, and the lack of slope maintenance before 1977 caused several devastating landslides with many fatalities.

However, now with modern technology, the CEDD has been making rigid and flexible barriers to decrease the number of sediments running down the slope to prevent the blocking of the roads and minimize the disruption of our daily life.

Besides the hard work of the CEDD, as responsible citizens, we can stay indoors during typhoons and rainstorms and avoid going hiking during prolonged heavy rainstorms so that we would not put ourselves at risk.

Lastly, this was an enriching experience, and I learned a lot of new things about landslides which would be helpful in the future.
