Kenneth Lloyd Hilton and Tan Ching Hsi, Austin from S5CH joined the BASF Kids' Lab Challenge 2019 held on 2nd November at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

They both are passionate about protecting the environment. They worked hard to decide on an experiment that would be able to bring the most change to the planet. They found that people use disposable plastic way too often, especially in the food industry. Thus, with a dream to reduce plastic waste, they came up with a sustainable method to produce PLASTATO: making plastic from potatoes.

It was difficult to come up with different ways to teach the “chemistry concept” behind PLASTATO to 6 – 12 year olds. Nevertheless, the boys had a lot of fun doing it, and this is how they creatively came up with using paper clips and Lego to explain the chemistry behind polymers to kids. These fantastic ideas helped them take home the 1st runner up prize! We are very proud of their achievements!
