2 - 13 July 2025 - Exploring the Belt and Road: Portugal Cultural & Economic Discovery Tour
From 2 to 13 July 2025, a delegation of 30 students embarked on a comprehensive 12-day journey to Portugal. Titled 'Exploring the Belt and Road,' this tour was designed to provide a deep dive into the nation's strategic role in the Belt and Road Initiative while exploring its rich historical tapestry.
Spanning major cultural hubs including Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, Évora, and Coimbra, the itinerary offered a unique blend of diplomacy, economics, and heritage. Students gained high-level insights into strategic cooperation through visits to the Chinese Embassy and the Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce. They also explored the intersection of history and modern innovation by studying the local startup ecosystem at UPTEC.
Cultural immersion was equally central to the experience. Students traced the roots of the 'Age of Discovery' at landmarks such as the Belém Tower and the University of Coimbra. The history of the region came alive through experiential learning, with students participating in traditional Azulejo (tile) painting and egg tart workshops, as well as enjoying UNESCO-recognised Fado music.
The tour concluded with a student-led exhibition on campus, where participants shared their insights on how history and the modern economy intersect in Portugal. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with students returning with a broadened global perspective and a deeper understanding of international trade and culture.
