Established in 2011 at the University of Hong Kong, the HKU Academy for the Talented (the Academy) is a membership-based programme that brings together students from diverse backgrounds globally. The exceptional programme challenges members to better understand their intellectual potentials and foster both their academic and personal growth.

Three of our students, as members of the Academy, have participated in the tailored academic programme and taken up the valuable networking opportunities as they collaborated with the world’s top students this summer. They have also received awards and scholarships for their excellent performances and would like to share with us their meaningful learning experiences.

Award: HKU Engineering Academy for the Talented: Academy Scholarship

After joining the HKU Engineering Academy for the Talented programme, I have understood more about different branches in engineering, such as quantum engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, etc. I have also enriched my programming skills through the robot design competition. Despite facing multiple difficulties during the programming process, I was able to debug my code and successfully finished my robot. To conclude, I have found lots of joy and enriched my knowledge of engineering through this programme.

Award: HKU Business Academy for the Talented - Collaborative Innovation Bootcamp: Most Innovative Award

The HKU Business Academy for the Talented - Collaborative Innovation Bootcamp has introduced me to a range of business topics, including design thinking, financial budgeting, and big data. Apart from attending inspiring lectures, I have worked with a group of local and international students on a strategic marketing simulation and a group presentation. Our group was awarded the most innovative award for the presentation on the topic of ArtTech solutions. We applied the virtual reality technology (VR) and motion capture system to aid the performing art industry in Hong Kong. Not only did the programme equip me with business fundamentals but it also allowed me to think out of the box by applying new ideas to tackle real-life challenges.

Award: HKU Business Academy for the Talented - Collaborative Innovation Bootcamp: Best Project Award

The five-day HKU Business Innovative Bootcamp has been a fruitful and educational experience. As an Economics student, I have learnt more about the real business world out there through how FinTech, Python and big data play important roles in various businesses nowadays. Throughout the Bootcamp, we learned how a startup company in Hong Kong, Hollo, created an application that combines technology and health knowledge and helps with the recovery of mentally depressed users. As Hollo is currently expanding its business into the healthcare sector, my group mates and I had learnt a lot as we came up with a business project plan for them in educating children and teens about mental health.

This program has been a rewarding experience. I have learnt more about how future technology and the world of business are eminently associated. More importantly, I have made great friends with shared interests.
