Mrs. Emily Shum - Head of Mathematics and ICT; Tutor of S2SW

I was educated at the St. Georges School in Hong Kong, having completed my GCE A-levels in one academic year before studying abroad in the U.K.

I received my Bachelor of Engineering at the University of Warwick, graduating with First Class Honours in Electronic Engineering.  My undergraduate research area is on the perturbation (pseudo-random) signals for frequency-domain system identification.  Upon completion of my Bachelor’s degree, I won sponsorship for a D.Phil (Doctor of Philosophy) in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford.    As I found that life as a full time D.Phil student was not for me, I followed the footsteps of my predecessor, the acclaimed actor Rowan Atkinson (a.k.a. “Mr. Bean”) to be the second drop-out student of my supervisor, Prof. David Clarke. My master thesis, published in 2000, focused on acoustic monitoring technology for cavitation detection.

After Oxford, I was offered a teaching position at the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where I taught undergraduate courses for 5 years before joining the HKUGAC.

In pursuit of my interest in education, I also obtained a Master of Education (Administration and Management) from The University of Hong Kong.  My master dissertation is on higher education in the knowledge-based economy, supervised by Prof. K. M. Cheng.
