Mr. Laurence Cheuk - Tutor of S2CP

With over six years of experience working in Chinese International School and YWCA in the information technology field, I gained a strong background in all phases of computer teaching, computer building, maintenance, troubleshooting, network administration and user support.  I have also rich experience in organizing training courses, especially for teachers and staffs who are not familiar with the computer.  Furthermore, I am very interested in programming.  I have written a web base administration system for YWCA and some learning systems for Chinese International School.  Every year CIS needed to buy a lot of new computers, printers and projectors, etc.  It was necessary for me to hold meetings with computer venders and product providers to decide which best suited our needs.  Furthermore, I had to keep the hardware inventory and network diagram up-to-date, using a self-developed program.  Such hand-on experiences are useful for me to teach students “real” computer aspects in the world and not only theory from books. 

Nowadays in Hong Kong, we cannot live without the internet, mobile phone and computer.  For me, I obtained a degree in Computer Science.  During the course, I found that networking or data exchanging between computers is very interesting,  especially using different media, such as optical fibers, wireless or broadband.  I therefore spent a lot of time in learning these aspects of technology. 

In this rapidly changing world, only computer technology skill is not enough for a school.  Subsequently I finished the Master of Science in Telecommunication course in The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.  With this high-tech knowledge, I am confident I can bring innovative ideas and help HKUGA College’s development in the field of technology, providing all students with state-of-the-art ideas about technology too, for example, topics related to wireless communication systems, mobile radio propagation, 3G and 4G mobile, new technique of WCDMA for mobile, etc.  I am using a lot of telecommunication devices such as LAN between computers in my working place and at home, WIFI, Bluetooth, GPRS, HSDPA for my PDA mobile phone to the Internet.  What I got from this course is to learn more fundamental theories for these new technologies and then change my position from the user level to the front-line of battle in this area.  My ultimate aim is to become a researcher in the future.

Personally, I like computer, new technology and mathematics very much.  I also like playing music and sports when I have spare time.  I am very glad that I joined the HKUGA College family so I can put what I had learnt to full use.
