Music
The music course during S1-S3 lays the foundations of the three major study skills: Listening, Composing & Performing.
These three areas are constantly inter-related, giving the overall study of the subject a deeply fascinating dimension.
Relatively few people will end up making their livelihood through performance. The majority of students will be the audiences of the future, so it is of utmost importance that all students are taught how to listen critically and analytically. Music examples in all styles and from all areas of the world are used to develop these discriminatory skills.
Performing necessarily takes place on different levels. Those taking individual instrumental lessons will have a variety of opportunities for solo and group performance. During class time, however, singing is used as the basis of group music-making. This core activity may be enhanced in a number of ways to take it to public performance level where appropriate.
The fact that music is part of the fabric of daily life will frequently lead to discussion about its role generally in history and society.
