Room to Read was founded by John Wood, a former Microsoft director.  Its mission is to work with local schools to establish schools, libraries and other educational infrastructure throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America.  They aim to intervene early in the lives of children, providing them with opportunities to read not just books in English but in their own language.  Their “Students Helping Students” campaign encourages schools to team up with Room to Read and put books into the hands of children who may never have had the chance to read a book, or even learn to read.  This is something that most people in Hong Kong would not even question.  Ms. Karen Seymour and Ms. Jennie Orchard from Room to Read gave an excellent presentation to our students on 13th September, 2007 on the various places that have been given schools and libraries They also spoke about the many ways students could help them through fundraising.  As they said, a little can go a long way to help.  To publish a book in the local language of the region costs approximately HK$ 8.00, which is just about the cost of the return fare to school by bus.
